Pottery Wheel Experience
Getting your hands dirty with clay is a wonderfully therapeutic, sensory, and creative outlet that helps you disconnect from screens and focus entirely on the present moment.
Overview
Get behind a potter's wheel and experience the mesmerizing art of shaping spinning clay. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of throwing, from centering the clay to raising the walls of a vessel. It is a tactile, deeply satisfying experience that challenges your coordination and rewards you with a unique handmade creation.
Step-by-step Plan
- Arrive at the Studio (15 mins): Check in at Studio Pansa, meet your instructor, put on an apron, and get introduced to the workspace.
- Demo and Introduction (30 mins): Watch your instructor demonstrate the steps of prepping the clay, wedging, centering, and throwing on the wheel.
- First Attempts & Centering (45 mins): Sit at your assigned wheel, get a feel for the pedal speed, and practice the crucial step of centering your clay with water and steady hands.
- Throwing Your Vessels (60 mins): Work on opening up the clay and raising the walls to shape simple forms like bowls, cups, or small vases under the guidance of the instructor.
- Finishing and Selection (30 mins): Choose your best piece to be fired, select your preferred glaze color, and help wipe down your wheel and tools.
- Post-Workshop Waiting Period: The studio will dry, bisque-fire, glaze, and glaze-fire your creation. You can return to pick up your finished ceramic piece in about 3 to 4 weeks.
Reservations & Hours
- Reservations: Highly recommended to book weeks in advance as these beginner taster workshops sell out quickly. Booking is done online via the studio's website.
- Hours: Workshops usually run on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) with typical time slots like 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM or 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM.
What to Bring
- Clothing: Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty (clay washes out, but splatters will happen).
- Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
- Hair tie: Essential if you have long hair so it stays away from the spinning wheel.
- Short nails: Highly recommended, as long fingernails can easily gouge the clay while throwing.
Budget
- Taster Workshop Fee: ~€90 per person (includes instruction, clay, glazes, and professional firing of your selected piece).
- Optional Drinks/Snacks: ~€5–10.
Tips & Accessibility
- Keep your hands wet: The clay needs constant lubrication; if it gets dry, it will stick to your hands and collapse.
- Accessibility: Wheel throwing requires sitting at a low stool and lean forward, utilizing leg pedals to control speed, though hand-controlled options are sometimes available. Reach out to the studio beforehand if you have physical accessibility requirements.
- Clean-up: Clay dust can be hazardous if inhaled. Always clean your station with wet sponges rather than dry brushing.
Backup Plan
If the wheel throwing class is fully booked, opt for a Handbuilding Ceramic Workshop. It is equally relaxing, requires no wheel experience, and lets you craft mugs or bowls using pinch and coil techniques that can be taken home after firing.
