North Sea Kitesurfing

sporty📍 The Hague, South Holland, Netherlands

Feel the ultimate adrenaline rush of catching the North Sea wind and gliding across the water at one of Europe's premier kitesurfing hubs.

Overview

Experience the ultimate rush of harnessing the North Sea wind as you learn to kitesurf. The Zandmotor, a unique artificial peninsula just south of Scheveningen in Kijkduin, is globally famous for its shallow, flat water lagoon. This makes it one of the safest and most optimal places in the Netherlands to learn how to fly a power kite and take your first water starts without battling heavy ocean waves. Under the guidance of certified IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) instructors, you will learn safety protocols, kite control, and eventually try gliding over the water.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Arrival & Gear Up (30 mins): Arrive at the beachside school (Kitesurfspot Den Haag at the Zandmotor). Meet your certified instructor, change into a thick neoprene wetsuit, and strap on your harness, helmet, and impact vest.
  2. Theory & Safety Setup (30 mins): Lay out the gear on the wide sandy beach. Your instructor will explain the wind window, the safety systems, and how to activate the quick release in case of emergency.
  3. Kite Control Practice (90 mins): Stand on the beach and launch a small trainer kite. Work your way up to a larger inflatable power kite, practicing precise steering, launching, landing, and feeling the power of the wind.
  4. First Water Steps / Body Dragging (60 mins): Enter the waist-deep shallow water of the Zandmotor lagoon. Practice "body dragging" (letting the kite pull your body through the water to understand its power) and, if you progress quickly, attempt your first water start with a board.
  5. Debrief & Beach Drink (30 mins): Head back to the kite hut to rinse off, change, and grab a celebratory drink at the adjacent Beachclub BIRDS.

Reservations & Hours

  • Kitesurfspot Den Haag is open daily during the windy season (typically April through October) from 9:00 AM to sunset, depending entirely on weather and wind conditions.
  • Reservations: Booking in advance is highly recommended. Lessons only run if wind conditions are favorable (typically between 12 to 25 knots). If there is insufficient wind, the school will reschedule your session free of charge.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear (to wear under your wetsuit)
  • Towel and a warm change of dry clothes
  • High SPF waterproof sunscreen
  • Water bottle and a quick energy snack
  • Note: Wetsuits, harnesses, safety gear, and all kitesurfing equipment are fully provided by the school.

Budget

  • Group Kitesurf Introduction (3 hours): €79 per person
  • Semi-Private Introduction (2 people, 3 hours): €145 per person
  • Private Introduction (1-on-1, 2 hours): €189
  • Post-kite drinks & snacks at the beach club: €10 – €20 per person

Tips & Accessibility

  • Wind Check: Always check your phone or email the morning of your lesson. Kitesurfing is 100% weather-dependent.
  • Physical Fitness: You don't need to be exceptionally muscular, as the harness holds the kite's power, but reasonable physical fitness and swimming ability are required.
  • Accessibility: This activity is physically demanding and involves navigating soft beach sand and wading through shallow water; it is not suitable for those with limited mobility or severe back/joint issues.

Backup Plan

If the wind is too calm or too extreme, your lesson will be postponed. Instead, swap your board for a surfboard or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rental to paddle the calm waters, or head to the nearby Pier of Scheveningen for lunch and ocean views from the covered Ferris wheel.
