Clog Decorating Experience

creative📍 Katwoude, North Holland, Netherlands

It offers a hands-on, artistic outlet that lets you engage deeply with classic Dutch heritage while leaving with a unique, self-made souvenir.

Overview

Tap into centuries-old Dutch folklore by designing your very own custom wooden shoes (klompen). At the Simonehoeve—a traditional cheese farm and clog factory in Katwoude near Volendam—you will paint a pair of souvenir wooden clogs or even full-sized, wearable ones. The experience begins with an entertaining live demonstration showing how wooden shoes are carved from blocks of poplar wood, followed by a guided tour of the cheese-making facility (complete with tastings). Once inspired, you will sit down in the workshop to paint, stencil, and personalize your own clogs to take home as a memorable keepsake.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Arrival & Welcome (15 mins): Arrive at the scenic Simonehoeve farm and check in. Receive a warm welcome and head to the workshop.
  2. Clog & Cheese Tour (45 mins): Watch an expert clog-maker use traditional machinery to carve a shoe from a wet block of wood. Afterward, walk through the cheese farm to see how Gouda is crafted and sample an array of local cheeses.
  3. Design & Sketching (30 mins): Settle into the rustic workshop tables. Pick your clog size (14 cm souvenir clogs are standard, but wearable sizes are available) and draft your design using pencils, stencils, or freehand inspiration.
  4. Painting & Personalizing (60 mins): Bring your sketch to life using fast-drying acrylic paints. Add your favorite Dutch patterns, personal symbols, or modern splashes of color.
  5. Drying & Wrap-up (15 mins): Let your masterpiece dry while you grab a coffee or tea. Once dry, pack up your unique, personalized clogs to display proudly at home.

Reservations & Hours

  • Reservations: Booking in advance is highly recommended to secure your workshop slot and materials, which can be done directly on the Simonehoeve website.
  • Hours: Open daily year-round. From April through October, hours are 08:30 to 18:00. From November through March, hours are 09:00 to 17:00.

What to Bring

  • Clothing you don't mind getting paint on (aprons are typically provided, but acrylic paint can stain).
  • A smartphone or camera to take photos of the cheese-making process and your finished clogs.
  • Comfort socks if you plan to upgrade and try on wearable sizes.

Budget

  • Clog Painting Workshop: €23.50 per person (includes 14 cm souvenir wooden clogs, painting materials, and the guided factory/cheese tour with tasting).
  • Optional Wearable Upgrade: An additional fee depending on the shoe size if you prefer to paint wearable clogs.
  • Optional refreshments: Around €3 to €6 for extra drinks or traditional Dutch biscuits on-site.

Tips & Accessibility

  • Public Transport: Easily accessible from Amsterdam Central Station by taking Bus 316 directly to the "Hotel Volendam" bus stop, which is just a 2-minute walk from the farm.
  • Accessibility: The facility, shop, and workshop area are wheelchair-accessible and stroller-friendly.
  • Inspiration: Prepare a design idea on your phone beforehand (think Delft Blue patterns, floral designs, or modern abstract prints) to jump right into the painting process.

Backup Plan

Since the workshop and tour take place completely indoors inside the cozy farm barns, this activity runs perfectly rain or shine. If you finish early or want to extend your day, you can explore the neighboring harbor village of Volendam or visit the nearby historic windmills of Zaanse Schans.
