Stargaze at a Dark Sky Park

nature📍 Lauwersoog, Groningen, Netherlands

Escape the persistent light pollution of the Low Countries to experience one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can actually see the Milky Way with the naked eye.

Overview

Located on the border of Friesland and Groningen, Lauwersmeer National Park is one of only two official Dark Sky Parks in the Netherlands. In a country known for its heavy light pollution, this protected oasis preserves natural darkness. On a clear night, you can look up to see thousands of stars, spot the constellations, track the Milky Way, or even catch a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Timing your visit (1 hour): Plan your journey around a new moon or during peak meteor showers. Check the weather forecast for clear skies. Aim to arrive shortly after twilight.
  2. Arrive at the park (30 mins): Drive to Lauwersmeer National Park. You can park for free at the Activity Center Lauwersnest or near the harbor.
  3. Head to a sky platform (30 mins): Walk to one of the custom-built sky platforms, such as Achter de Zwarten or Vlinderbalg. These platforms feature specially designed backrests where you can lie down and look straight up.
  4. Acclimatize your eyes (20 mins): Once settled, turn off all white lights. Avoid looking at your phone. It takes about 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness.
  5. Observe the night sky (1-2 hours): Use a stargazing app (with a red-light filter) or a physical star map to identify constellations, planets, and the band of the Milky Way. Listen to the peaceful sounds of nocturnal birds and wind in the reeds.

What to Bring

  • Warm layers (it gets surprisingly chilly near the water, even in summer)
  • A blanket or a reclining camping chair
  • A thermos with a hot beverage (tea, coffee, or hot cocoa)
  • A red-light flashlight or red headlamp (white light ruins night vision)
  • Binoculars or a camera with a tripod for astrophotography

Budget

  • Entrance and Parking: Free (€0)
  • Transportation: Variable (fuel or train/bus to nearby stations, though a car is highly recommended for late-night access)
  • Snacks & Drinks: €5–€10 (DIY thermos and snacks)

Tips & Accessibility

  • Access: The park is accessible 24/7 and free of charge.
  • Lighting: Do not use regular flashlights; use a red light to navigate the trails to protect your own night vision and avoid disturbing others or local wildlife.
  • Accessibility: The paths to the main viewpoints near Lauwersnest and the harbor are paved or flat gravel, making them relatively easy to navigate, though the sky platforms themselves have stairs to reach the top viewing deck.

Backup Plan

If the sky turns cloudy, head to the nearby harbor of Lauwersoog to see the moody harbor lights and silhouettes of ships, or grab a late-night warm meal/drink at a local harbor restaurant before heading home. Alternatively, reschedule for the next clear night.
